Senior Developer for the European Digital Library

Have you had experience in implementing functional specifications? Do you like programming challenges? Do you like to show people what you mean? Are you a good communicator? Would you like to take part in the creation of the European Digital Library accessing the cultural heritage items and collections of the Museums, Archives, Audio-visual Archives and Libraries of Europe? Then come and work with this international team.

The European Library, hosted by the Koninklijke Bibliotheek in its Research and Development Department, has received funding from the European Union to undertake a project to develop the European Digital Library.

The job requires the understanding and implementation of functional specifications for the development of prototypes. You are able to develop following the Web2.0 trends and Web standards. You have practical knowledge of how to search, retrieve and expose various types of digital objects. Your work is driven by usability and interoperability.

You are likely to have worked in web publishing, portal development, and are looking for a new challenge. Some travel will be necessary.

Profile:

  • Developer with at least 5 years of experience
  • Good experience of Web applications development
  • Knowledge of XML, XSL, HTML, Javascript, AJAX + 2 or more of PHP, Java, Ruby, Perl, Python; CSS desirable
  • OO-oriented programming
  • Database skills (MySQL, Oracle)
  • Experience with indexing and search engines
  • Experience with data harvesting, search & retrieval protocols desirable
  • Knowledge of metadata desirable
  • Software engineering and information modelling skills desirable

Our Offer:

A 19 months contract based at the Koninklijke Bibliotheek in The Hague, The Netherlands. According to the CAO – onderzoekinstellingen the salary scale indicated for this job is 10, maximum of € 3546,- gross per month on the basis of a 40 hour week. In addition you will be entitled to 42 days holiday per year plus holiday pay and an annual bonus of 8 and 5.4% respectively.

Interoperability Manager European Digital Library

Do you like metadata? Can you talk intelligently about semantic interoperability? Have you experience in developing metadata schemas? Do you have ideas on how to make museums, archives and libraries interoperable? Then we need you to help us create the European Digital Library and give the world access to the cultural heritage of Europe.

The European Library, hosted by the Koninklijke Bibliotheek in its Research and Development Department, has received funding from the European Union to undertake a project to develop the European Digital Library.

You will have an understanding of the current and future metadata and semantic web interoperability issues across cultural sectors in Europe. You are likely to have had had previous experience in metadata registries, collection descriptions and the semantic web. You will have run projects aimed at standardising metadata. Your task will be to work with people across the cultural heritage domains to solve issues of interoperability. You will also collaborate closely with the groups of The European Library working on collection and object application profiles, metadata registry and service descriptions. You will be able to create functional specifications of user and stakeholder requirements and want to work in an international setting. The job will involve some European travel.

Junior Developer

Have you just finished college? Do you have technical knowledge but lack practical experience? Do you like to work in an international environment as well as developing web sites? Then join our team of developers and architects responsible for creating and managing the websites of The European Library and associated projects.

You will be working in the offices of The European Library and EDLnet hosted by the the Research and Development Department of the Koninklijke Bibliotheek. The European Library portal and service has been running for 3,5 years and is constantly looking for ways to improve its architecture and processes. EDLnet is a new project where museums, archives, visual-archives and libraries of Europe collaborate to create a European digital library.

You will be part of a small technical team working on the development and maintenance of websites, the creation of prototypes, and the implementation of technical solutions to access, search, harvest, index and present data from the cultural heritage environment. You will be expected to understand, maintain and develop the sites’ front-end and back-end according to functional specifications and release plans. With training you will also help to bring in new partners and provide them with technical support via e-mail and teleconferences. Additionally you will participate in technical meetings and have opportunities to travel in Europe.

Profile:

  • Developer with high level of secondary education
  • Knowledge of client-server development and AJAX applications (service-oriented)
  • Knowledge of PHP, Java, XML, XSL, HTML, Javascript; CSS desirable.
  • Basic database skills (MySQL)
  • Familiarity with metadata and/or information and software modelling (UML) desirable

Our Offer:

An 18 month 40 hours per week, contract based at the Koninklijke Bibliotheek in The Hague, The Netherlands. According to the CAO – onderzoekinstellingen (Collective Labour Agreement, English version) the salary scale indicated for this job is 9 maximum of 3227,- gross per month on the basis of a 40 hour week. In addition you will be entitled to 42 days holiday per year plus holiday pay and an annual bonus of 8 and 5.4% respectively.
